Designated Beaches

Surrounded by beautiful sea, Ishigaki Island has many beaches. However, it is dangerous to swim at most of the beaches because the coasts are in bad condition and there are no lifeguards. Because Ishigaki is surrounded by reef, the water is very choppy and dangerous. If you wish to go into the beautiful sea around Ishigaki Island, use the designated beaches only. They are well monitored by lifeguards, and they are protected Box Jellyfish nets. The swimming season is from April to October.

Be careful when swimming

You must be cautious of box jellyfish and the reef current! Box jellyfish are semi-transparent, and they are found floating on the edge of the surf from June to September.
When these jellyfish sting people, the toxins in its tentacles can cause severe pain. In the worst case, humans can suffer cardiopulmonary arrest or asphyxia.

When waves crash on the reef, they roll back into the sea as a strong tide. It?s very dangerous. If you are starting to be pulled out to sea, make sure to swim parallel to the beach for the closest land through the reef current.
